Q: You continue to be recognised among Sri Lanka’s most loved alco-bev brands. What drives this sustained consumer preference?

A: At Lion, we have always approached brand building through what we deliver instead of what we simply say. The proof points must be visible across every touchpoint, from product quality and availability to the experience at the outlet. We operate in a highly constrained environment with limited outlets and restricted communication, yet over the decades, we have built a system that delivers every single day across the island.

When consumers choose a brand, they expect it to be available and consistent. Reliability builds trust over time. It is this consistency at scale that sustains preference and keeps the brand at the forefront of the category.

Q: What does it take to lead and actively shape an evolving alco-bev category such as Sri Lanka’s, while building for the next phase of growth?

A: As the category leader, we take responsibility for expanding the category and developing it for its next stage of growth. Sri Lanka is still an evolving beer market with a large share of consumption taking place in off premise environments. There remains significant opportunity to build occasions and elevate the experience. Our role is to create those occasions, raise expectations and make the category more relevant to changing consumer lifestyles.

Developing the category also requires clarity on where future growth will come from. Looking ahead, we see growth coming from both expanding depth and breadth. In terms of depth, we must strengthen the core and lead the beer category with the quality, consistency and availability that continue to build trust over time.

In terms of breadth, we must expand into new consumption spaces and evolving consumer needs across the broader alco-bev landscape.

Q: When you already lead the category at scale, why does differentiation still matter?

A: Differentiation is what keeps a category moving. When you operate at scale, the risk becomes stagnation rather than competition. Therefore, differentiation is not about standing out for the sake of it but about creating new spaces where the category can grow.

We approach this through our portfolio. While our core brands continue to provide scale and consistency, differentiation comes from how we grow beyond that. Our premium portfolio elevates the category by creating aspiration and higher value experiences, while our craft and innovation platforms allow us to explore emerging tastes and new consumer segments.

More importantly, differentiation is about identifying shifts in behaviour early. Consumers are no longer looking for the same experience. Preferences are evolving across flavour, format and occasion. Our role as the category leader is to anticipate these shifts and build ahead of it. That is how Lion is unlocking new growth spaces.

Q: Execution at scale is often where brands win or lose. What underpins your ability to deliver consistently across the island?

A: Our ability to reach across the island, maintain quality, and deliver consistently is built on a highly disciplined system spanning supply chain, logistics and trade execution. But behind the system is something even more important – our people. At Lion, we develop leaders who understand the business end-to-end rather than narrow functional specialists.

Our people move across functions, are exposed to real market conditions and are given responsibility early in their roles. This creates a leadership mindset where decisions are made with a fuller understanding of impact, from the brewery to the outlet. The result is consistency at scale, even in a volatile and highly regulated environment. Strong systems matter but long-term performance depends on the quality of thinking behind them.

Q: How are global partnerships and international expansions shaping your next phase of growth?

A: Our global partnerships expand both our capability and ambition. Through alliances with Carlsberg and Diageo, we bring in world-class standards, global brand portfolios, and exposure to how categories evolve in more developed markets. These partnerships allow us to operate according to international benchmarks while continuously raising the bar locally.

At the same time, we contribute deep local understanding and strong route to market execution, which allows us to scale effectively in a complex and regulated environment. This combination of global capability and local strength gives us a distinct advantage. It also enables us to build a more diverse and premium led portfolio while strengthening the overall category.

Beyond partnerships, we are expanding our own footprint internationally, scaling through a disciplined, market specific approach that adapts formats, brand positioning and propositions to suit local consumer behaviour.

Q: Beyond product delivery, what does the brand stand for in the lives of consumers and what emotional space does it occupy?

A: At its core, Lion stands for leadership and local pride. The brand has always been present in the moments that matter. It is an indispensable part of how people come together, celebrate and connect. Consumers recognise our leadership through the brand’s presence and role in the category.

Local pride anchors this, making the relationship authentic and meaningful – Lion is unapologetically Sri Lankan. What has also emerged over time is how people choose to express this connection through who they are and where they come from. The brand has become one of the most powerful symbols of our national identity.

Q: As we navigate increasingly uncertain conditions both locally and globally, what is Lion’s approach to building brands in a volatile environment?

A: We operate in a volatile environment. Locally, we work within a highly regulated and constrained market. Globally, we are exposed to different consumer behaviours, competitive dynamics, and economic and political realities. Our brand building approach must be integral to how the business operates – it cannot be reactive.

For us, that starts with clarity. We are clear on what remains constant – product quality, consistency and the standards at which we operate. Around that, we build flexibility. Our route to market strategy, portfolio decisions and investment priorities are all designed to adapt to changing conditions without losing direction. Partnerships also play an important role. They bring external perspectives and global benchmarks, which help us challenge how we operate.

However, ultimately, it comes down to people. We build teams that are comfortable operating in uncertainty, making decisions with incomplete information and taking responsibility for outcomes. This mindset allows us to remain stable when conditions shift – because in a volatile environment, the advantage does not come from avoiding change. It comes from being able to operate through it consistently and with clarity.
